Network Project for Manufacturing – Operational Technology

Project Details

In an era where cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, a leading manufacturer recognized the need to bolster its network infrastructure to protect its operational technology (OT) assets. The organization’s manufacturing network, which hosted critical equipment on WiFi, required a clear separation from the corporate network to mitigate risks of cyber incidents. Following a comprehensive security audit, it became evident that the company needed to enhance its OT cybersecurity maturity and improve WiFi coverage within the manufacturing facility.

The audit revealed several vulnerabilities and potential points of intrusion that could jeopardize the integrity of the OT network. To address these concerns, the manufacturer embarked on a network project aimed at increasing the visibility into network traffic, providing real-time protection for OT assets, and ensuring reliable WiFi coverage. The project included creating a WiFi heat map of the manufacturing facility, designing access point coverage to ensure all critical equipment had full WiFi coverage, and implementing FortiAPs with a FortiGate enterprise license specifically for OT work loads. Additionally, micro-segmentation was introduced to the OT network, further enhancing its security posture.

The outcome of this endeavor was transformative. The manufacturer achieved better visibility into network traffic on its OT network, enabling more effective monitoring and response to potential threats. Real-time protection from FortiGates ensured that OT assets were continuously safeguarded from cyber attacks. Furthermore, the optimized WiFi coverage resulted in less manufacturing downtime, as critical equipment could now reliably connect to the network without interruptions. This project not only enhanced the cybersecurity maturity of the organization but also significantly improved operational efficiency across the manufacturing facility. The success of this initiative underscores the importance of robust network security and reliable connectivity in maintaining the integrity and productivity of modern manufacturing environments.
