Operational Technology Security Assessment – Post Secondary Education

Project Details

The leadership and Facilities Department of a prominent university recognized the urgency in understanding the gaps within their Operational Technology (OT) network security posture. This need arose in light of increasing industry highlights regarding OT cyber security issues. With plans for the construction of additional facilities and the implementation of advanced HVAC and Building Management OT systems, the university leadership sought a comprehensive assessment to identify vulnerabilities and ensure robust security measures were in place. The university’s leadership wanted to be proactive in addressing any weaknesses in their OT network, thereby safeguarding their investments and ensuring the continuity and safety of their operations.

The project entailed an onsite assessment of the university’s OT environment, conducted in accordance with IEC 62443, an international series of standards addressing cyber security for automation and control systems. The assessment included a meticulous examination of the existing OT infrastructure, identification of vulnerabilities, and evaluation of potential risks. This comprehensive approach ensured that all facets of the OT network were scrutinized, from the physical security of devices to the robustness of communication protocols.

The detailed report generated from the assessment provided actionable recommendations for remediation. The findings offered the IT leadership and Facilities Department an eye-opening realization that their current OT network security was not at the desired level. This newfound understanding has enabled them to collaboratively plan and implement the necessary protections to fortify their OT network, ensuring a secure and resilient infrastructure for their upcoming projects. As a result, the university is now better equipped to handle future expansions and integrate new technologies with confidence, knowing that their OT systems are robustly protected against cyber threats.
