“That’s What She Said” Edition: IT Terminology

Shing Digital prides ourselves on providing top-notch managed IT services. But let’s be honest, sometimes the world of technology can get a little…saucy.

Take “flapper,” for example. Sounds innocent enough, right? But in the IT world, a “flapper” is a type of network cable. Get your mind out of the gutter!

And then there’s the “rack.” Sure, it might bring to mind a sexist comment, but in our line of work, a “rack” is a sturdy metal frame used to house servers and other equipment.

Have you ever heard of “plenty of phish”? Sounds like it is time to start dating? Well, in reality, it’s a term used to describe the abundance of phishing scams circulating online.

Another suggestive term is “SecaaS.” We won’t even try to spell out what that sounds like as this is a company blog. SecaaS stands for “Security as a Service,” which is a cloud-based solution for your cybersecurity needs. You may also want to say that to someone who got majorly on your nerves.

“Dongle” raises a few eyebrows especially when using the term “stick the dongle in”. In reality it is a small device that plugs into a computer or other device to provide additional functionality or security. Such as data storage, internet access, etc.

Need to “unzip your files”? We all know that it is the process of removing or copying files from a compressed file. But when guiding my 78 year old mother to unzip her file, she did ask a lot of unnecessary follow up questions.

Bits and bytes and half a byte is a nibble. Yes “nibble”. Don’t turn the “B” upside down.

One of my favorites is a “Penetration Test”. Every time I mention it my husband giggles…. Closely followed by a discussion about a project where we do a lot of “Mounting”.

We could go on and on, but we think you get the picture. The world of IT is full of terms that might raise an eyebrow or two. But don’t let that deter you.

At Shing, we’re here to help you navigate the sometimes-risqué world of technology with ease. We can explain all those “dirty” terms in plain English and help you find the right solutions for your business needs.

So, the next time you hear an IT term that sounds a little too…suggestive, don’t worry. Just remember that it’s probably not what you think it is. And if you’re ever unsure, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to help.
